Sienna Melissa: Oakland, California, USA

My name is Sienna — it’s a color. I live each day like it’s a “me day.” I choose to wear my most comfy clothes and to not look in the mirror. I stop to smell the lavender and greet everyone with a smile. Sometimes people ask me what my “secret” is but really, I just love being me. It’s pretty great learning something new each day and sharing positive vibes with the people around me. When you know that happiness and calm are states of mind, you are empowered to choose to smile in the rain and to flourish in the darkness. All I want to do is to help you know this too.

I started yoga as a broken dancer years ago in 2011, and became drawn to the mission of sharing yoga’s healing benefits almost immediately. After teaching dance for many years it seemed a natural progression, and my years of teaching yoga have been inspirational to say the least. I enjoy teaching yoga to people of color who may feel unwelcome, unseen, or otherwise uncomfortable in the studios near their homes and places of work. I am on a mission to open the first Black-owned yoga studio in San Francisco and to cater specifically to people of color as well as queer and trans people who are also marginalized in the corporate yoga climate.
